This woman has a friend named Luke, who is about to celebrate his 40th birthday. She generously offered to pay to take Luke and a few of their friends out to have dinner for his birthday.
She told Luke he could pick any restaurant he wanted to eat at. Now, here’s the catch: she’s vegan and has been since she was in her 20s.
The way she eats has never been a problem for Luke before. So, when she ended up asking Luke where he made reservations for his birthday dinner, she was shocked at his response.
He mentioned to her that he picked out a local BBQ spot, and it’s well known for having nothing to eat aside from meat. There literally are no other options.
“[This] place that is famous here for having a menu that mocks people who don’t eat meat, like literally has a section that says “Vegetarian options: don’t let the door hit you on your way out,” she explained.
“I asked what he expected me to eat, and he got huffy and said well, it’s his birthday, so it shouldn’t matter; I should eat before getting there and just order drinks while everyone else eats dinner and still enjoy everyone’s company, etc.”
“This sounds miserable to me. I had zero expectations of Luke picking somewhere vegan-friendly…I expected him to pick a steak house, and I would’ve been fine with a salad and some sides. I didn’t expect him to choose somewhere that prides themselves on meat being in every single dish on the menu.”
All in all, there will be 9 people having dinner for Luke’s birthday, so she really isn’t too keen on having to pay upwards of $300 for everyone to enjoy their evening out while she can’t.
She’s currently considering telling Luke her offer is off and that instead of paying to take him and their friends out to dinner for his birthday, she wants to give him a different gift.
