California Firefighters Come To The Rescue After A 13-Year-Old Blind Pup Fell Into A 15-Foot Deep Hole
On September 21, firefighters in Pasadena, California, came to the rescue after a blind pup tragically fell into a construction site hole.
The dog, named Cesar, is 13-years-old and lives next to an active construction site in the city.
And according to Cesar’s owner, Mary, she first realized that Cesar was no longer on her property after her other dog began barking.
Then, Cesar responded to her calls, but his bark indicated that he was much further away than her yard.
So, she contacted the Pasadena Fire Department, who promptly arrived on the scene and launched a search for the pup.
Cesar was ultimately found at the bottom of a fifteen-foot deep and three-foot wide hole at about 7:00 p.m. It was concluded that he must have wandered onto the construction site and fallen into the hole.
“He is an old dog, but he is still very curious and adventurous,” Mary said of Cesar to ABC7.
But, the firefighter’s work was far from over– since the confined space presented a multitude of challenges for the rescue effort.

“The dog was blind, and this is a construction zone. Confined space rescues are low-frequency and high-risk. There’s a lot of steps we need to do to make it as safe as possible– for not just the dog but also our rescuers,” explained Chad Augustin, the Pasadena Fire Chief.
In turn, Augustin’s team secured various pulleys and ropes in order to leverage one firefighter into the hole. Then, it took the firefighter about twelve minutes to reach Cesar, place him in a harness, and safely bring him back above ground.
Thankfully, Cesar’s shock wore off once the firefighter arrived, and the pup emerged uninjured. Then, he just shook off some construction dust and dirt before being reunited with Mary.
The Pasadena Fire Department has since shared footage of the miraculous rescue effort on Twitter, along with photos of Cesar and the fire crew after he was safely extricated. There, community members have shared their immense gratitude for the first responders’ work in saving Cesar.
“So sweet. So happy he was returned safely to his owner. God bless you, firefighters, for rescuing this darling dog,” wrote one Twitter user.
“A beautiful story about good people helping this little dog. So heartwarming!” added a second user.
“Thank you all for saving this pooch!” said a third.
