Sadly, when this 16-year-old guy was only five, his mom passed away. Three years later, his dad married his stepmom, but he did speak to him and his 24-year-old sister about his dating life before tying the knot. When his dad sat them down, he mentioned it was perfectly fine for him and his sister not to view their stepmom as a literal mom to them. He remarked that if it made them uneasy, they didn't even have to consider their stepmom as a mother figure at all. His dad wrapped up the chat by asking them to please show their stepmom some respect and keep their hearts open to allow her to have some kind of a role in their lives. He and his sister stood firming in not wishing to welcome their stepmom as a new kind of mom to them. His dad put them at ease by stating that he would speak to their stepmom and fill her in on their feelings. After the wedding, everything was fine, and his dad didn't try to push his stepmom into the role he didn't want her to fill. "There were times she called us her kids, and she'd try to do some of the mom things like Mother's Day activities, or sometimes we'd have stuff, a parent-kid sports day, and she'd want to go instead of dad since "most kids have their mom," he explained. "But dad would gently remind her that she wasn't mom. My sister and stepmother had a really rocky and rough relationship, and they don't speak much." "My sister tolerated her for dad after the wedding more than anything. But at first, she was okay with her. She just hated that she didn't accept the no-mom role." Now, he and his sister would go to their grandma and grandpa's house after school when they were little, and his dad would pick them up after he got off work. So, his stepmom wasn't stepping into any motherly after-school care activities. His stepmom proposed quitting her job so she could help take care of him and his sister more, but his dad talked her out of it by saying she wouldn't be happy basically playing mom to them while they refused to recognize her as such. His stepmom kept working, but she also kept trying to be a mom to him and his sister, though it was against their wishes. His dad and stepmom tried to have their own kids, but they found out that nothing could help his stepmom have children of her own. "Dad has been comforting her about it," he said. "But now she has decided that I could let her adopt me, and we could work on changing our relationship." "I said no when asked and told Dad. He decided they needed couples therapy. We were at her family's house Sunday afternoon, and they were talking to her about the infertility stuff, and she had mentioned she still has one kid, AKA me, and that we were maybe making that official, and even if we didn't, she was still mom to someone." He got irritated, and his dad wasn't around to intervene as he was in another room. He announced in front of his stepmom's family that she's not his mom at all. He went on to say she will never be officially adopting him since he's not her child. His stepmom burst into tears, and his dad came running in before making them all go home. When they got back to their house, his dad and stepmom got into an enormous argument. His dad has maintained that he's done nothing really wrong; it's just that he embarrassed his stepmom in front of her loved ones.
