Having a run-in with a skunk is never a pleasant experience, especially when that encounter leaves you with the notorious skunk smell.

This pungent odor can cling to you, your pets, and even your belongings, making it a difficult challenge to remove.

Many people typically turn to popular remedies they’ve heard over the years, like tomato juice or oatmeal, but these also don’t always work as expected.

So, let’s discuss why some of these common solutions fall short and learn about a scientifically proven method to neutralize the smell effectively.

Debunking Popular Remedies

First up is tomato juice, which is often the first suggestion for getting rid of skunk odor.

The idea is that the strong smell of tomato juice can mask the skunk’s scent. However, simply masking the odor is not the same as actually neutralizing it.

The skunk’s spray contains thiols, which are sulfur-based compounds that are incredibly stubborn and cling to skin and fur. So, while tomato juice might provide temporary relief, it won’t eliminate the odor.

Another remedy you might have heard of involves using oatmeal. The theory is that oatmeal can absorb the skunk odor.

Unfortunately, even though oatmeal is excellent for soothing skin irritations, it’s not effective at tackling the skunk smell. The skunk spray’s chemical composition requires a more potent solution than anything oatmeal can provide.

Neutralizing With Oxidation

Again, skunk spray contains thiols, and the key to getting rid of the smell is to neutralize these sulfur compounds.

This is where oxidation comes into play. Oxidation breaks down the thiols into odorless compounds. One effective formula, recommended by the American Chemical Society (ACS), uses ingredients you likely already have at home!

To neutralize skunk odor effectively, you will need one-fourth cup of baking soda, one teaspoon of baby shampoo, and one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide.

First, combine the baking soda, baby shampoo, and hydrogen peroxide in a container. This mixture will create an oxidizing agent that breaks down the skunk spray’s thiols.

Next, apply the mixture to the affected area, whether it’s your pet, your clothing, or yourself. Be sure to lather it up thoroughly, ensuring the solution covers all the smelly spots.

Afterward, allow the solution to sit for about five minutes. This will give it enough time to neutralize the odor.

Lastly, rinse the solution thoroughly with warm water. You can also repeat the process if necessary.

It is important to note that hydrogen peroxide can lighten hair or fur. So, you should use it with care. And for humans, following up this treatment with a hot shower using plenty of soap and shampoo is recommended.

Additionally, this solution cannot be mixed or stored ahead of time because the mixture can lose its effectiveness if not used immediately after being prepared. That’s why you should keep the necessary ingredients on hand and only combine them after a skunk spray encounter!
