Among the finds were 70 chess piece fragments, a small bead that features the colors of the Icelandic flag, spinning wheels for weaving, lamps, pots, pearls, and coins.
Furthermore, a longhouse, several animal enclosures, and a pit lined with stones were discovered. The pit was filled with a collection of bones, including the remains of whales. Finally, the researchers dug up various game pieces made from the same rock as the animal carving.
They were for an ancient game called boxing, which was played from the Viking Age to the Middle Ages. The rules of the game are unclear, but the game pieces offered more clues as to how it was played.
In total, 4,000 artifacts have been found at the site. The archaeologists will spend the winter analyzing all the findings.
