She heard him tell Maria that he was a traveler who had lost his way and needed to use the phone. At the time, it was the ’90s, so people didn’t carry cell phones around.
She couldn’t hear what the man said on the phone because he sounded really muffled. After he made the phone call, he turned to leave.
When he walked past the stairs, he looked up and saw Ashlee. She noticed a patch of white hair on his head in the same spot as the panther’s.
Then, he thanked Maria for her help. He said, “It’s really easy to get lost in the shadows,” then left. Ashlee was unable to fall asleep after that.
When her parents came home, she ran downstairs and told them all about the panther and the man. They chalked the panther up to a child’s overactive imagination and fired Maria for letting a strange man into the house.
Now that she is an adult, Ashlee did some research on the incident. She discovered that there had been reports of black panther sightings all over Illinois, even some close to Chicago.
However, the Department of Natural Resources has maintained that there are no black panthers in the state of Illinois.
