Today, only about 25,000 blue whales are alive. They are listed as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act and have been protected since 1972 by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. There are only between 2,000 and 5,000 pygmy whales left in the world.
The new information will be instrumental in furthering the conservation efforts for blue whales. They continue to face numerous threats from humans, such as collisions with ships, pollution, and climate change.
Researchers strive to protect blue whales’ habitats and migration routes to ensure they have a long and bright future ahead of them.
Fortunately, evidence suggests that the species is making a comeback, and their population is increasing.
