The U.S. Surgeon General Wants To Place Warning Labels On Social Media Platforms That State How They’re Harming Adolescent Mental Health

He also clarified that a warning label on its own is not enough to make social media safe for kids. It would take the combined efforts of parents, schools, social media companies, and the government to combat the detrimental effects of social media.

The surgeon general recommended that legislation from policymakers should shield young people from online abuse and violent content. That means they will also prevent social media platforms from collecting children’s data and restrict features like autoplay and push notifications.

Furthermore, schools should prohibit the use of phones during classroom learning and socialization time. Parents must create phone-free zones as well, in addition to closely monitoring the content their kids are consuming.

Hopefully, a surgeon general’s warning label and help from the rest of society can improve the safety of online spaces for kids.
