New Research Suggests Ultra-Processed Foods May Increase The Risk Of Frailty As You Age, Particularly Among Women

It is crucial to note that the intake of ultra-processed foods was linked to frailty regardless of overall diet quality. However, not all processed foods were tied to frailty – like whole grains.

According to Teresa Fung, who led this research effort, the study’s findings underscore how diet can have a substantial influence on the risk of frailty among older women.

“We found that higher intake of ultra-processed foods is strongly associated with increased frailty, even when accounting for overall diet quality. This suggests that it’s not just what we eat but the level of food processing that may play a crucial role in aging and physical function,” Fung concluded.
