Blinking Can Impact How We Process Visual Information, According To New Research

The findings show that blinking is more than just a way to keep our eyes moist. It’s also a method that helps us with our visual processing.

The latest research further emphasizes that human vision is a combination of sensory input and motor activity, meaning that physical body movements aid in our brain’s understanding of the information we are receiving.

Michele Rucci, professor and author of the study, noted that this is most likely an evolutionary strategy.

“It adds to a growing body of evidence—in good part from our laboratory—showing that the visual system is very sensitive to temporal changes and uses them to recognize spatial information,” he said.

“In other words, unlike a camera, the visual system does not just use the image on the retina, but it relies strongly on how this image changes.”
