A Family Renovating Their Home In England Happened Upon Over 1,000 Gold And Silver Coins Believed To Have Been Buried Beneath The Floor During The First English Civil War

According to Waseem Ahmed, a doctoral student of history at the University College London,  Dorset was a center of activity for troops during the English Civil War.

The individual who buried them likely did so out of fear that someone would take them. If you were a person who supported the monarchy, Parliament could seize your estates.

The collection of coins included sixpence, silver half-crowns, and gold pieces. They featured the faces of British monarchs who ruled from 1547 to 1649, such as Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Mary, and King Charles I.

Recently, Duke’s Auctioneers in Dorchester auctioned off the coins, which were sold for a total of about $75,900. The sale estimate was only $43,887.

The coins were sold individually or in smaller groups instead of as one large collection. A gold coin with Charle’s face on it brought in the most money at around $6,250.
