Ask Yourself These Key Questions To Help Build The Closet of Your Dreams
Are you someone who constantly stresses out about having “nothing to wear” when, in all honesty, you have a closet full of clothes?
Getting rid of and learning how to prioritize articles of clothing is really difficult, and many of us are guilty of holding onto items we never wear. It’s a privileged position to be in and a habit that’s hard to break.
Your dream closet or wardrobe should be filled with pieces you adore and can see yourself wearing for a long time.
So, after you’ve done a proper closet clean-out, here are some things you should ask yourself before purchasing more clothes to go into your dream closet.
Does it fit properly?
I’m often a sucker for buying something that doesn’t fit quite right when I try it on in the store and convincing myself that it will fit eventually.
For instance, have you ever bought a shirt that was too tight or small and thought you’d “save it” for when you shed a few pounds?
Or perhaps there’s something that needs to be adjusted or taken in by a tailor, so you buy it but then never go through with visiting a tailor?
Prioritize buying something that fits you perfectly the moment you try it on. This means you’re bound to start wearing it immediately after purchasing, and it’ll soon become one of your favorite pieces!
Saving clothes you hope will fit eventually is a bad habit that will surely bring you down. So from now on, only buy clothes that fit.
Will I wear this more than once?
When you have a formal event like a wedding, gala, or special party coming up, shopping for a new dress or fancy blouse is really exciting. However, you should take into consideration how often you’ll be wearing the item of clothing you’re picking out.
If you’re shopping for a dress to wear to your friend’s engagement party, don’t look for a dress that you only want to wear to that one specific party.
Look for a dress that you’ll want to wear more than once. Because, after all, if you’re only going to wear something once, you might as well rent it or borrow it from a friend.
When building your dream closet, you want it to be full of things you love so much you wish you could always wear them.
So the next time you pick out something for an event, be honest with yourself and see if it’s something you’d want to wear again on a different day.
Do I want it because it’s on sale?
I don’t know if anyone else can relate to this, but when I see something even remotely cute on sale, I want to buy it simply because it’s on sale.
When you’re shopping, sometimes there’s nothing like the rush you get when you purchase a piece of clothing you really like on sale.
But sometimes, we get so caught up in how proud we are of ourselves for buying things at a lower price that we buy them just because we can.
So, if you’re ever in the clearance section, pick up an article of clothing you like and think, “I might as well get this because it’s on sale,” ask yourself if you like the item enough to buy it at full price.
If the answer is no, then maybe you shouldn’t get it and risk filling up your dream closet with something you only sort of like.
Am I only buying this because it’s trending?
Fashion will always have its trends, and with influencer “fit checks” clouding our social media feeds, it can be hard to resist wanting to buy an article of clothing or accessories simply because it’s trending.
For instance, I bought those galaxy print leggings in 2013 because they were trendy online for a while. But did I wear them more than twice? No, I did not.
Try not to force or pressure yourself to buy something you won’t genuinely wear or use because “everyone has it.”
Sure, it’s another story if you really love that trendy piece and can see yourself wearing it even when the trend has died down a little.
But if you’re only going to use it temporarily until fashion trends have moved on, it’s probably not worth it, and soon, you’ll have a fashion graveyard of dated items.
Many of us don’t have the luxury or pressure to wear something completely different daily like certain celebrities and fashion influencers.
So, when creating your ideal wardrobe, you want to ensure you’re filling it with versatile clothes that genuinely mean a lot to you. Shop smart, and remember to consider donating any clothing you want to get rid of!
