Human remains have been uncovered in other wedge tombs in Ireland, but in this case, it is unlikely that any will be found. The ground at the sun altar was much too soggy for any remains to have been preserved.
Based on the monument’s name, researchers believe that it might be oriented to the sun in some way since it was built in a spot that provided a striking view of the sun setting into the sea.
Other Irish megalithic tombs are known to align with the sun in a similar fashion, particularly on the winter solstice.
Overall, the rediscovery of the hilltop site means that we will be able to learn more about the funerary and construction practices of the prehistoric people that once occupied the region.
