“In New York, they have this thing called a dependency override form, which you can fill out if you’re completely independent,” said Emily.
“Not only was I completely independent, but my mom hadn’t filled out taxes in years, so I couldn’t use her tax information, and my father’s not really in the picture,” she continued.
She ended up getting her entire tuition cost covered, along with some money for rent. For the semester, she got $8,000 back from the school itself.
When she started school, she wanted to become a nurse. And she finished her first semester with a 4.0 GPA!
But then the pandemic hit, and she failed all her classes except one. So she changed her major to teaching and failed again. After that, she dropped out temporarily to figure out what career path she truly wanted.
Even though Emily has been through many difficulties–homelessness, her mom’s mental health, a pandemic–she continued to persevere, and she’s encouraging others not to give up no matter how hard life may seem.
“I think it’s important to let you guys know that I failed!! Failing is okay, but you have to pick yourself back up and keep pushing,” concluded Emily.
