“Another cousin came in and began making harsher jokes, which the kids laughed at,” he recalled.
“These ‘jokes’ brought my boyfriend to tears, and I refused to let that slide. When the gift trading began, I took the three aside and let them know that I wasn’t happy with their comments and that they weren’t okay to say. I told them to apologize to my boyfriend because it was unfair to him, and they refused because they were just jokes that we weren’t meant to hear.”
He told his relatives he didn’t care if his boyfriend wasn’t supposed to hear them, that they still needed to apologize. They refused once again, so he told them they wouldn’t be receiving their presents from them since they were being disrespectful.
Suddenly, his relatives began apologizing, clearly showing they were more interested in getting their presents than making his boyfriend feel better.
Then, his youngest cousin began telling his older relatives that he was withholding a bunch of their gifts, and everyone started getting mad at him. A bunch of his relatives began making a big fuss about the situation, and when it became clear that no one was planning to apologize to his boyfriend, he decided to put his foot down. With the help of his sister, he kicked those relatives out of his house.
“When they tried to grab their presents before leaving, I stopped them and rushed them out the door,” he added.
“The whole thing fell apart after that, and it all ended very abruptly.”
After his Christmas gathering ended in chaos, he wondered if he was too harsh with his family.
Should he feel bad for kicking his family out, or were they wrong for making offensive comments?
