One of the things I was taught growing up is that you don’t always have to buy new to get a good product.

Especially when it came to furnishing a room; my favorite reading chairs have been purchased second-hand and for very little money. The most I’ve ever had to do is clean it up and air it out for a day or so. Doing stuff yourself and be incredibly rewarding, and you can try to make things that are exactly your style.

TikTok user @Housetohomey has shared several videos of her distressing wood or just making life a little easier with some of her classy dupes, and one of our favorite DIY videos of hers involves painting a fabric chair.

“I painted fabric…and I love it. And before you freak out, it actually turned out super cute,” she shared.

“Here’s how I did it. I mixed latex paint and fabric softener. Stick to a 50-50 ratio because I did way too much fabric softener to start, and it was way too thick.”

This makes me a little nervous. I’ve seen people try to paint fabric furniture before, and it always ends up looking cracked and splotchy.

“And then I spray down the fabric with a mixture of 50% water and 50% fabric softener,” she continued.

“And then I started painting. This is a phenomenal DIY if you do not want to pay to get your entire piece reupholstered or if you’re looking for a faux leather look.”

“This was the moment I thought I really messed up. It was looking so streaky and see-through, and I hated it.”
