Number three: don’t be afraid to introduce seasonings! Adding a dash or two of spices such as cinnamon, oregano, garlic powder, coriander, and turmeric is an easy and effective way to acquaint your child with new flavors.
A small amount of seasoning added to an already recognizable food is much less daunting than placing an entirely new dish in front of your child. It’s all about the baby steps here!
Fresh herbs can help pique your child’s interest as well, especially if they get to be more hands-on with it. If you have a small garden, allow them to pick a few leaves of dill, mint, cilantro, or basil to go into your meal.
Number four: introduce your child to different textures from the get-go. The first texture kids usually get exposed to is the thin, puréed consistency of baby food. Switch up the texture of foods you’re feeding to your child to broaden their horizons and make them more open-minded to new foods in the future.
For example, you can leave a few soft chunks in their mashed potatoes instead of creating a completely smooth mash. If your child has been eating mainly peeled potatoes, leave the skin on the potatoes.
And finally, bring everyone together for a family meal at the dinner table. Having a family meal adds a social aspect to eating. Kids will feel like they’re participating in something meaningful and create fond memories of the whole family being together. Plus, kids can witness multiple people trying a variety of foods, making them more likely to follow suit.
Hopefully, raising an adventurous eater just got a whole lot simpler!
