Here’s How To Clean Your Birkenstocks So You Can Keep Rocking Them For Fall

Let them dry completely before slipping them on or putting them away. Wearing them while wet may cause the leather/suede to stretch so that they’ll no longer mold nicely to your feet. If you store the damp sandals in your closet, it could lead to mold or mildew growth.

Instead, place them in a well-ventilated area to dry for a full day. It’s not recommended to use heat to dry them as that may result in cracking of the leather/suede.

After they’re dry, it’s time for the final step, which is to condition or waterproof them. For suede Birks, apply a waterproofing spray. Cover the cork footbed before spraying.

For leather Birks, treat them with a leather conditioner. Lightly rub the conditioner into the straps, being careful not to touch the cork footbed. This last step protects your Birkenstocks from issues like cracks, scratches, and water damage and only needs to be performed about once or twice a year.

If you wear your Birks regularly, they should be cleaned every few weeks.
