During her wedding reception, she saw her parents talking to her cousins, so she walked over to them.
“I overheard my parents informing them I dropped out due to not being able to handle college and that it was just too hard for me. When I denied this, informing them I could not afford it, my parents got really flushed and said that, of course, they offered to pay and that I shouldn’t say such things. I don’t know why, but this particular thing broke me,” she continued.
Then, she discreetly requested for her parents to leave. When they refused to go, she asked security to walk her parents out of the reception. At this, her parents finally left.
Even though the situation was handled quickly and calmly, other guests learned about her parents being kicked out, and roughly half of her family, including her sister, chose to leave because of it.
After the wedding, she received a lot of negative feedback from family members who’d chosen to leave the reception when they learned her parents were kicked out. Multiple family members told her that she shouldn’t have humiliated her parents like that.
She knew that inviting her parents was going to cause issues, and she could have ignored their behavior, and she wondered if she reacted too harshly.
However, she believes that she shouldn’t have had to deal with drama like this from her parents on her wedding day. Her husband is on her side, and he hadn’t wanted her to invite her parents in the first place.
What would you have done if you were in her shoes?
