He held an auction where the old letters that made up the sign were sold for over $27,000 and raised enough for the sign to be rebuilt using entirely new letters.
Since then, the city of Los Angeles has done well in taking care of the sign by power-washing and repainting it when needed.
For the safety of people and to preserve the sign, it is in a restricted area, and getting too close to it or touching it is prohibited. However, there are many beautiful places in the city where you can get a fantastic picture with it.
In honor of the sign’s centennial, the Hollywood Sign Trust has excitingly announced plans to build a visitor center where folks can go to learn more about the sign’s history.
