And today, this tradition has still persevered. During NORAD’s busiest seasons, the call center– which is aided by an average of 1,500 volunteers every year– will receive over 150,000 phone calls on Christmas Eve.
But, with the advent of the internet, kids can also now visit the NORAD Tracks Santa website to keep up with Santa’s travels live and in real-time.
And since the webpage is highly accessible and does not depend on live call operators, millions of more children are able to join in on the fun of following Santa’s journey every single Christmas.
According to Lieutenant Sean Carter, a public affairs officer who also runs the NORAD Tracks Santa Program, no child will have to worry about the sleigh-tracking technology failing this weekend, either.
“The same technology that will be there to warn us of missiles or incursions by land or sea– that’s the technology tracking Santa. Those technologies are fail-safe,” Lt. Carter said. Phew!
On top of keeping up with St. Nick and his eight dashing reindeer via the call center and NORAD Tracks Santa website, kids and adults can also stay updated via Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Youtube.
