Sixteen-year-old McKenna Brown of Palm Harbor, Florida, loved playing hockey, spending time with her family, hanging out with friends, and practicing her faith.
She was also a daughter, sister, and best friend who was known as the “glue that held a lot of groups together.”
But, on August 7, the East Lake High School student tragically took her own life due to bullying just a few days before beginning her senior year.
McKenna’s death has left the Palm Harbor community in shambles, and parents Cheryl and Hunter Brown have begun speaking out against bullying and advocating for compassion among teens.
According to the Browns, their daughter had been a frequent target of “physical and emotional abuse.”
“She was broken. She was hurt. She was alone. She felt like she did not belong, but she chose to suffer in silence because she never said, ‘I need help,'” Hunter said.
Now, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has launched an open investigation into the events leading up to McKenna’s death.
In the meantime, though, the Brown family hopes that McKenna’s story will inspire young adults to be more mindful of their words and actions toward others.

“When you see somebody who is being ostracized or alone or just needs a little hug– a pick me up– you know, reach out to them,” urged Hunter.
Cheryl and Hunter also created a Facebook page entitled In Loving Memory of McKenna Elizabeth Brown, where they have urged community members to share positive thoughts and special memories with McKenna. And since being launched on August 10, hundreds of people have done just that.
“Words from me will never come close to describing the funny, beautiful spark of life that was McKenna,” wrote Dave Clemens.
“She was also an incredibly talented and fiercely competitive goalie. We will deeply miss seeing your big, friendly smile and huge hello around the rink, McKenna.”
“McKenna was larger than life. The whole room or rink or snack bar lit up when she walked in. Always a smile from ear to ear and a big ‘ole hug was not far behind. Just a wonderful young lady. Her loss will be felt forever,” shared David Gentry.
In lieu of flowers, the Brown family has since requested that any community members consider donating to the BU CTE Brain Bank or the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
