Since Johnny’s seizures are so unpredictable, he sleeps in bed every night with Danielle. But she knows that he’ll require more independence as he grows up, and she wants him to regain at least some sense of normalcy.
So the family decided to pursue a new course of support; finding a service dog specially trained to aid those with epilepsy.
His mom explained the exciting possibilities for Johnny’s future if he can get a service dog.
“The dogs are trained to alert Johnny and anyone around him that a seizure is coming on … retrieve medicine … [and] use themselves as a barrier if Johnny has convulsions so he doesn’t hit his head, as well as roll Johnny over on his side if he starts to seize to prevent suffocating.”
With a supportive friend by his side, Johnny can go back to school and sleep on his own. The only issue with obtaining a service dog is their training costs, which adds up to $30,000 that insurance will not cover.
There are also long waitlists and training periods that can take up to a year.
Still, Johnny’s family has decided to pursue this option through “Loyalty Service Dogs” and are hopeful that with the GoFundMe community’s support, they can give Johnny his life back.
