How to Really Fix Your Overheating Macbook Air

April 30, 2008

macbookairoverheating.gifI was taken with the Macbook Air from the moment Steve brought it out on stage. But after I finally brought it home from the Apple Store my love affair ended really quickly. I was experiencing system hiccups, freezing and overheating. I couldn’t watch a YouTube video or work on a Word document without the system hanging up. Might as well have spent less money on a EEE PC with better performance. But I decided to hold out and figured that a firmware update would remedy the problem. Indeed two firmware updates did come a long and did reduce the performance lags a little bit but my Air was still misbehaving. Then I discovered this thread on the Apple Discussion boards. A Macbook Air owner purchased a $10 app called Coolbook which does some magic by throttling the processor and temperature and he claimed that as a result his Air was now working great, the way it should have been out of the box. Desperate and frustrated, I went ahead and purchased Coolbook. Much to my relief, Coolbook works beautifully and my Macbook Air is now working great. I’m no longer experiencing those super aggravating freezes and chokes, and my Air is running cooler. Of course it’s ridiculous that i have to purchase a 3rd party app in order to get my $1800 laptop to work properly - Apple should have released the proper firmware update to fix these issues. Regardless I want to pass this discussion thread on, and I recommend that all Macbook Air owners purchase Coolbook for their own sanity.

Classy Jacquard Laptop Sleeves from Liz Claiborne

April 30, 2008

lizcases.jpgIn case you didn’t know, Best Buy has a great line of exclusive gadget accessory cases from Liz Claiborne that tend to be affordable and stylish. They just got in three new laptop sleeves that look a lot more expensive then they really are, each retail for just $28.49, which is the average price of a boring black sleeve. There is the new pink, gold, and multi Jacquard laptop sleeve to choose from. The cases are meant to fit 15.4″ laptops and each feature a felt-lined interior to keep your laptop protected. Overall, they definitely look like a set of classy laptops sleeves and would be a great Mother’s Day gift.

iDance WALL-E Will Shake its Nuts and Bolts to Your Music

April 30, 2008

wallemp3.jpgMy Roomba is waiting in great anticapation for the movie WALL-E to come out. Finally a movie about the gentler side of robots, rather than the Terminator. However with any Disney Pixar movie there is always tons of merchandise that will be marketed to buy and this movie will be no different. Over at the Sharper Image (yes they are still in business on-line) they are currently selling for $24.95, the iDance WALL-E which will operate in the same manner as our beloved i-Dog. It will dance and light up and even make sounds along with the music that he hears or pumps out via an audio-in jack or USB port connected to your MP3 player or computer. I’m already getting ready to add this to my ever growing menagerie.

April 30, 2008

shoeheel.jpgFor all the ladies who need to wear a nice pair of heels to work but by the end of the day wish you could wear something more comfortable, and for those women who may be too tall or too short for that hot date, these are the shoes for you. Camileon Heels is a company that makes shoes that have adjustable heels. Available in all different styles, heels can be adjusted from 1 1/2 to 3 1/4. Wear the shoes with just enough heel to look professional and then extend it at night for that after work cocktail party. The shoe is easily adjustable and tries to hide the extended part of the heel underneath the shoe. Prices range from $210 and upwards and are all made from Italian Napa leather. So the next time you snap a heel in your fancy Louboutin’s consider getting a shoe that could have prevented that for half the money. Skeptical? Dvice has a full review of Camileon Heels, complete with a video.

Smoy iPod Case Comes with a Photo Frame

April 29, 2008

smoycase.jpgIt seems we like to put pictures in and on anything these days, just another example of this is the Smoy Photo iPod Case. The Smoy iPod case is a slip cover case made of brown vinyl with a window frame you can slip photos into. The frame size is 15/16″w x 7/8″h which isn’t very big but just big enough to put something meaningful. The vinyl is thin enough to operate without you removing it from the case. Not bad for only $28.00

MP3 Player Alarm Clock with Video Support

April 29, 2008

jwd.jpgOnce and awhile we come across something from our Chinese neighbors that isn’t just a knock off and is pretty worthwhile. We can’t guarantee how well it’s made or if it sounds any good but this device looks cute. The 2.0 Inch TFT Screen MP3 Radio + FM ( what a catchy name….) has just what it says and it works as an  alarm clock, has a built-in speaker, and a 1GB storage capacity, as well as MP3, WMA, and AVI video support. It is also expandable via a SD/MMC expansion slot. For $88.00 it may seem pricey for something from an unknown company but its a pretty unique device, as there aren’t that many dedicated MP3 player / Alarm Clocks out there.

A Little Parched, Grab a Sandal

April 28, 2008

shoedrink.jpgIf you get a little thirsty as you stride along the beach, instead of lugging around another bottle of water just fill your sandals with a cold beverage. The Reef Dram Sandal from Swell features a flask in the footbed with a screw cap. You can only open it with the Reef’s exclusive opener. Unfortunately the design is not all that feminine, which I think stinks. Are only men thirsty when walking around?! [Read more]

AOL MyMobile Beta for Smartphones Rips Off Yahoo Go 3.0, But Who Cares

April 25, 2008

mobilesm.jpgIn an effort to keep their email users from leaving, AOL has released a cool new software app for smartphones called AOL MyMobile Beta. Compatible with most popular Windows Mobile devices, like the Blackjack II, it lets you access AIM, AOL Mail, Mapquest, AOL pictures, AOL Cityguide, Moviefone, your AOL contacts, and the weather all via a neat and organized app. Did we say neat? It’s actually very familiar - they no doubt took cues from Yahoo Go 3.0 which lets smartphones users access Yahoo popular services like Yahoo Mail, Flickr, etc, using a similarly styled interface. Both Yahoo Go 3.0 and AOL MyMobile are currently in Beta and have some kinks to work out, but they are must haves being free and all - especially if you are a Yahoo Mail or AOL mail user that has a compatible Windows Mobile Device. However our guess is that Yahoo Go 3.0, being a 3rd incarnation, is probably the superior app. Anyway, this gets us thinking - forget Microsoft buying Yahoo, we want AOL & Yahoo to merge so we can have the best of all of their free services meshed together.

VEPTU the VERTU Knock-off Sports Diamonds But We’re Skeptical

April 24, 2008

veptu.jpgWould you like a VEPTU phone? No, no I didn’t spell that wrong, I know, you think I’m saying VERTU… Well I’m not. So here we go again with that old saying that imitation is the best form of flattery. The VEPTU is a luxury mobile cell phone that looks awfully like the VERTU by Nokia. The company is based in China, gee what a shock. The VEPTU looks distinctly like the VERTU in design and is supposedly gold plated in 18 or 24 carat (I’m sure they mean carrots). There is even a model with diamonds. It has all the typical bells and whistles of any average cell phone these days but the one thing it does lack is the concierge service VERTU offers their customers. [Read more]
