Frances started at IBM in 1957 and retired in 2002, but has remained active over the past couple of years with programs that encourage women to study computer science. Congratulations to Allen, and we are sure that she will serve as an inspiration to many other geeky girls to earn similar achievements in the future.

Blueant’s Blue Sonic Portable Speakers Play Your Phone’s Music Via Bluetooth

February 27, 2007

blueant.jpgBlueant’s Blue Sonic Bluetooth speakers is is a portable speaker system that allows to you to wirelessly stream A2DP stereo audio coming from your phone. It also works a speaker phone, a speaker system for regular mp3 players, and it supports VOIP applications. Sounds pretty promising, especially with its 10 hour talk time battery life and it claims to have the ability to simultaneously support up to 8 devices. Unfortunately, Laptop Magazine is very unhappy with the sound quality coming out of it for something that you’re paying $119 for. However we figure that the technology will get there eventually. In the meanwhile, if you have a need for this specific type of device, this will do the job, just don’t expect too much.

February 27, 2007

exv7.jpgWe love Casio’s Exilim line of Ultracompact cameras because they’re tiny pretty things that know how to pack a punch. One of the latest additions to the Exilim line up is the EX-V7, the world’s slimmest camera with a 7x optical zoom. It also features a 7MP senor, VGA recording for movies in the very healthy H.264 format, and it has a 2.5″ brought LCD display. And you get all of that in a body that is 2.5cm thick for a not totally outrageous price of $399.

Stop Junk Snail Mail and Plant a Tree Simultaneously

February 27, 2007

no-junk-mail-copy.jpgWho likes getting junk snail mail? Not me that’s for sure. It’s either a dozen credit card offers or catalogs cramming up my tiny mailbox for my apt. I toss half of it away and the other I have to shred so I’m not a victim of identity theft. I have always been an avid supporter of recycling my junk magazines and catalogs but Greendimes.com takes it one step further. Using their website you can control the type of junk mail you want and don’t want. For every piece of mail stopped for $4 a month or $36 a year they will reduce the junk you get in the mailbox and help you keep your private life private and plant a seeds for trees in your name. It’s good for the environment and it saves time sorting and tossing junk mail that you will never read. The planting of a tree takes place in South America, Central America, and Haiti just to name a few. Who knew junk mail could actually be useful for the environment.

UBONI USB Laser Pointer Pen Review

February 23, 2007

usbpen.jpgWe’ve seen USB pens before, but the UBONI Pen one ups other pens with its nifty laser pointer. As a USB key, it comes with 1 GIG of memory for a fair price of $33. The pen itself is classically designed with a shiny black finish and silver accents that make it look like one of those pens that cost a fortune. And it also looks and feels like a quality pen made of good materials.
Accessing the USB connector is done by screwing off the top of the pen from the bottom half. The ink is refillable like a regular pen, and in general the pen writes well. The Laser Pointer also works well and can be practical for using at meetings, or you could have fun annoying co-workers with it. Admittedly we tried out more of the latter.
Transfer speeds were good. A 51MB file transferred on to the Pen in about 30 seconds. We wanted to do a more scientific test using HD Tach RW benchmarking software, but the company’s site is currently down and the software is not available to download. Our only gripe with the pen is that it is a bit thick, and after sometime writing with it our hands cramped up. Unfortunately, because it does need to fit in a USB connector there is no way that the manufacturer could have made it any thinner.
Overall, we love the pen and think is a great gift for professionals, as well as geeks, and just about everyone else. It comes packaged in a gift box so that all you have to do is wrap up the box and you’re all set to give it away to someone for an occasion. The UBONI USB Laser Pointer Pen is available from Valvolo whom also has a lot of other neat affordable gadgets and accessories, many of which aren’t easy to find on this side of the Atlantic. usb5.jpg usb3.jpg usb2.jpg

Hidden Safes Store Your Valuables in Household Objects Such as Soda Cans and Outlets

February 22, 2007

hiddensafes.jpgWhat does a Soda Can, Peanut Butter Jar, Candle, Electric Outlet, Jell-o Bowl and a Dried Soup Container all have in common? They each make a great hidden safe to store your valuables in. As a matter of fact, it’s probably wiser to store your jewels in the inside of the hidden outlet safe than it would be to store it in an expensive safe. After all what are the chances that a thief would think to look there for your valuables… unless they just read this post. These hidden safes range in prices from $14.99 to $19.99.

February 22, 2007

usbcell.jpgMoixa’s USBCELLs were the first standard sized batteries to come with a USB connector for charging. Now they’ve come out with cell phone batteries with USB connectors as well. Russians Find a Way to Drink Vodka Over Internet with a USB-shot-glass.

February 21, 2007

USB Vodka Shot-GlassDrinking is an indisputably important part of Russian culture. It’s frequently used as a bonding element, an initiation ritual, an entertainment piece, or a business component. The stereotype is that Russians drink a lot of vodka. And it’s the truth. However, there is an unspoken rule in Russian Culture - a person shall not drink alone. That is why, it’s common in bars to be approached by strangers who are trying to form “Trinity”.
Sergei Mikheev, an expert of E-Generator - a Russian Peer-2-Peer creative agency, has come up with a new way of solving a common problem - you need to drink, but you don’t have anyone to drink with. Here is how it works - you plug in a special shot glass to a USB port, connect to an online vodka room, and find virtual drinking buddies. The main idea is that the shot-glass will track the amount of liquor in it and report it to other users. This is done to make sure that the person has finished the shot (it’s considered rude in Russia if one doesn’t finish a drink). Unfortunately, it’s not known yet, how the glass will determine its content. Via Lenta.Ru
