Why Companies Should Be Giving Us Free Gadgets
March 28, 2006

It’s a known fact that companies give free gadgets to celebrates because they believe it to be an affective way to advertise their product. I am not going to delve into how much this irks me, at least not today. But I am going to point out a recent news story which helps prove my theory that giving free gadgets to regular folk can be a very effective method of advertising as well.
Cnet News reports that a seventeen year old video blogger uploaded a video to YouTube that she made using a Logitech web cam, and Logitech’s avatar effects software. In just over a week the video logged more than 210,000 page views.
The result? Two of Logitech Webcams were among Amazon’s 100 best selling electronics’s items this past Friday. We all know where I’m heading with this. The moral of the story is that companies should consider giving us regular Joe Shmoes free toys!

Luxury Body Dryer Gets Rid of Towels for Good
March 27, 2006

One of the many reasons I dislike public restrooms are the hand dryers, they never seem to work and they can be scalding. An English company named Triton has developed the Luxury Body Dryer. Think hand dryer - but bigger. This is a full body dryer that will make the moisture disappear off of you in just three minutes. Is the Luxurious Body Dryer a novelty device for the luxurious lazy, or a gadget from the future that will eventually end up everywhere? Either way I foresee many nasty lawsuits in Triton’s future.

Just Say No to Microsoft Word, Part II
March 24, 2006

A few weeks ago we posted about Writely and a few other free web-based Word processors. AjaxWrite is another similar free service, one that looks especially similar to Microsoft Word. It loads in 6 seconds, opens Microsoft Word and Works, Word Perfect, Open Office, and Star Office documents, it also supports embedded graphics, tables, and footnotes. And it operates quite speedily. Really, why would anyone bother spending money on a word processor anymore? Our prediction is that within a few months this freebie service, and similar services will either get bought up or disappear once the big software companies realize they’re in trouble.
Sanyo’s Y:TV LCD Television Kinda Looks Like an iMac
March 24, 2006

No, that is not a new iMac concept that you’re looking at, but it looks good enough to be one. Sanyo’s new Y:TV (AKA the CE32LDY1) is a 32 inch LCD that is HDTV ready and has a 160GB built-in hard disc recorder. It will be available in a white or black finish. The TV has a Freeview tuner for those lucky Brits who get to enjoy it. We certainly hope that an NTSC version of this beauty comes over to the U.S. (Source: T3 Magazine)
Hello Kitty Nokia 6010 Phone from Cingular
March 23, 2006

The phone has exclusive ringtones, wallpapers, and a game. Unfortunately, unlike its Hello Kitty Asian counterparts, aside from the special Hello Kitty look and content, the phone is really a no-frills enty-level phone. It retails for $99.00.
Ultraportable USB & Firewire 7,200RPM Hard Drives
March 22, 2006

There are tons of light and portable hard drives on the market, but most of them lack in an important area - speed. Most truly portable USB and Firewire-powered hard drives have just a 4,200RPM or 5,400RPM hard drive inside, many with just a 2MB data buffer. If your working with video projects and heavy multimedia files, 4,200 RPM and 5,400 RPM just doesn’t cut it. My personal favorite is Lacie’s Mobile Porsche Series, which has the USB 2.0 and Firewire Mobile Portable Hard drive design by FA Porche, a 60GB model with a 7,200 RPM drive. It’s so light, I hardly notice that it’s in my bag, and even better is the fact that I don’t need to carry around a clunky AC adapter to power it like so many similarly powerful hard drives which require one. Transfer speeds on the Lacie are excellent, and so are access speeds. Unfortunately I can’t find this specific model on Lacie’s web site anymore. But I did some research and dug up two very similar alternatives. These two other similar mobile hard drives series run at 7,200 RPM with an 8mb data buffer or higher:

Track Down Your Cash with Where’s George
March 21, 2006

Today as I sifted through the bills in my wallet in search for a five dollar bill, I noticed that there was text printed on one of my bills that was ordinarily not there. The words "WheresGeorge.com" were printed on areas of the bill. First I sort of panicked and assumed that someone had exchanged a counterfeit bill with me. But I decided not to jump the gun just yet, so I headed over to WheresGeorge.com. It turns out that WheresGeorge.com is a web site that tracks the travels of dollar bills through circulation around the country. Its users log on to the site to follow the paths of their cash after it leaves their hands. Most of the users mark their bills with the "WheresGeorge.com". The site has a large community of followers whom visit their forums, many members have user profiles, and there is even a George Store. Maybe they should call this the Cult of George. Thousands of people obsessed with money? Who ever heard of such a thing!
Tubthumper is a Speaker Disquised as a Plant Pot
March 20, 2006

The Tubthumper looks like any ordinary old plant pot, but it certainly doesn’t sound like one. Hiding inside of it is a 90 watt two-way waterproof speaker designed to survive outdoor weather. Eyezup Kit is Like Powerpoint in a Box
March 20, 2006

The Eyezup presentation system from Grandtec is kind of like having powerpoint in a box. You can create presentations via its wireless keyboard and remote, and you can view the presentations on any TV or projection screen. No computer or software required. You can transfer your own images to the presentation via USB or memory card. A video cable, USB cable, memory card and adapter are included. We’re a bit skeptical, and can’t imagine that this device will produce visually stunning presentations, but for $49.99 it might be able to find a niche among… hmm…. we’ll get back to you on that.

More Customizeable iPod Shuffle Rip-Offs
March 17, 2006

A while back we posted about a company that was selling customizeable Shuffle rip-offs. We’ve discovered yet another company selling Shuffle rip-offs. The "rePlay MP3 Player" looks practically identical to Apple’s iPod Shuffle, but the rePlay can have your color logo printed on both sides. It’s available in 128mb, 256mb, 512mb, 1GB and 2GB capacities. They also have another custom USB MP3 player with a familiar-looking design - the Jazz Mp3 Player. Unlike the real Shuffle, this one can play WMA files, and it has 6 equalizer modes.
