Google Talk Beta is Here! (IM & Voice)

Client_1There have been rumors for some time now about a possible Google instant messaging client in the works that would support voice calls. Turns out the rumors were true! The new Google Talk allows you to instant message other Google Talk users, as well as make Voice Calls to other Google Talk users. The Beta version is now available to download here.  Unfortunately, a Gmail account is required for Google Talk. The good news is that Google Talk is compatible with Gaim and  Trillian. However, the voice calling feature only works if you’re using the actual Google Talk software.
The Google talk beta version, like Google and Gmail, is designed with a clean and simple interface without much bells and whistles. Time will tell if this instant messaging client can compete with more popular and flashy IM clients such as Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger. I wouldn’t bet on it though… unless they add some customizeable icons and wallpapers, or some extra special features, I just wouldn’t bother using it. Us ladies need color in our IMs!

var simpleadTextColor = ‘#000000′;
var simpleadTextFace = ‘Arial, sans-serif’;
var simpleadLinkColor = ‘#006699′;
var simpleadUrlColor = ‘#999999′;
var simpleadSize = ‘234×60′;
var simpleadBgColor = ‘#ffffff’;
var simpleadBorderColor = ‘#FFFFFF’;
var simpleadTextSize = ‘11px’;
var simpleadBorderWidth = ‘0′;

    It’s just jabber. That means you don’t actually have to have a gmail account - you just have to have access to a jabber server. You don’t even have to use their client. What Google did is in no way new or inventive. The hope is that they will improve upon a solid IM protocol and add features without making it horrid like AIM. And while colors are nice, if another person that is *obviously* color blind messages me with their custom colors, I’m switching back to a monochrome CRT.

Got something to say?
